Naughty Nuri’s Rib Shack has become something of an institution in Ubud, and given it was right on our doorstep we had to understand what all the fuss was about.
It’s a simple place, set right up alongside the noise and traffic from the road and consists of a small, charcoal grill at the entrance and a jumble of tables and chairs which make up the restaurant. When we arrived it was a full house, which as we all know is a welcome sign
We managed to get squeezed in alongside a local family, and with menus in hand we saw that we had the choice of barbecued meat, meat or more meat. Nuri’s is not a place for fine dining or vegetarians but is perfect for anyone that loves chunks of protein, dirty hands and a fun evening.
Charlie and I went for their famous ribs, and for a bit of variety mum ordered the Australian beef steak. Alongside it we had some fat chips and a basic green salad. As soon as the hot meat hit our table, it became apparent why this place is so busy and carries such a reputation. The ribs are divine. Generous portions, marinated in a wonderful, sticky sauce and cooked to perfection. You’ll do well to find better. The steak was perfectly ok but alongside such quality ribs, it was second-best. The chips were good, and the salad offered a welcome hit of freshness.
The greatest mistake of the night was our ordering of white wine; it would have been perfect on the chips as vinegar. But quite frankly, who goes there for wine? So that one was our mistake.
Naughty Nuri’s is well worth heading to if you’re in the area. Great fun, superb value and their ribs deserve all the accolades. They are clearly doing very well, as they have opened up a sister operation, Nuri’s Mexican, just down the road. One for next time.
